Romano ZANOTTI

Romano Zanotti (1934-2019) was an Italian painter born in Moio della Civitella, in the province of Salerno, Italy. Zanotti began his artistic career at the age of 20 and quickly became a leader of the Kinetic Art movement.

Career and Influence

Kinetic Art experienced a true renaissance in the heart of contemporary creation. The undisputed figure of this movement is Victor Vasarely, but other notable artists like Romano Zanotti also made their mark on this trend. Born out of Futurism and Abstract Art, Kinetic Art took shape in 1955 following the "Mouvement" exhibition at the Denise René Gallery in Paris, where Zanotti exhibited for over 15 years alongside Vasarely, Soto, and Agam.

In 1967, Zanotti joined the CO-MO (Constructivism and Movement) group until 1972. His works reflect research around a space of tension and balance, where curves are omnipresent. A former singer, he saw in his paintings undulations of musical notes taking the form of colors and shapes that influence vision.

Works and Techniques

Kinetic Art is centered on the use of light and movement, exploiting visual phenomena to challenge the passivity of the viewer. Romano Zanotti abandoned figuration in the 1960s to move towards this artistic movement. His work uses geometric forms and produces optical vibrations to actively engage the viewer.

Exhibitions and Awards

Romano Zanotti participated in many important exhibitions, including "Dynamo" at the Grand Palais in 2013 and "ERRE, Variations Labyrinthiques" at the Centre Georges Pompidou in 2011. His works continue to be exhibited in major cultural institutions and galleries such as the ARS ESSENTIA Art Gallery in Beaune, Burgundy, France.

Legacy

Romano Zanotti is recognized for his patience and meticulousness in handling his paintings, seeking to create a powerful impact on the viewer. His painting must make one dream, mislead, and reveal its true nature.
